Kress IGA

by Carol Baize

Kress IGA had closed its doors after serving the community since 1937 after 73 years in business. It’s so sad to see a landmark disappear. From the time they opened their doors in the center of town, with the wooden floors and no air conditioning, the residents of East Canton shopped at Kress IGA.

The residents have bought everything from a five pound bag of potatoes for 19 cents in 1937…

to a sale of 50 percent off everything during their last couple days.

Founded in 1937 by owner John H. Kress and his wife Blanche Kandel Kress.

The business at 406 W. Noble St., was the village’s only full-service supermarket.

Committee chairman Mary Puskarich said Kress donated all remaining stock to the East Canton Community Food Bank, operated by local churches.
