Chuck Sypolt

In 1958, Charles W. Sypolt started Chuck Sypolt Chevrolet, Inc. in East Canton and in 1982 he moved the dealership to Louisville, OH. Shortly after the move, he retired, turning the dealership over to his sons, David and Charles “Chuck” Sypolt. A couple cars were sponsored by Sypolts, and here are some pictures and stories.

The Chevy Boys-

That story fits the one behind this 1962 model. This Roman Red Corvette was bought by Robert Youtz in 1963 for $3,330 from a used car dealer and street-driven for about a year before it became part of a three-car team made up by the Chevy Boys from East Canton, Ohio. The trio worked at the local Chevy dealer, Sypolt Chevrolet, in East Canton. The other cars were a 1965 big-block Corvette driven by Paul O’Neil, and a 1965 Chevelle driven by Jim Foltz.

This Youtz car was raced at Magnolia Dragway 42 and Quaker City drag strips in the 1960s and at the U.S. Nationals in 1966 and 1967, says the car’s current owner, Sam Eddy, of East Canton. This car won many events. Sam has about 75 trophies to prove it and says the car was a “constant winner.” Youtz even got sponsorship money from Sypolt, Bay’s Pure Oil and a corner gas station. They raced the car with the factory hardtop and kept the convertible top stowed away for weight over the rear wheels, right where they wanted it.

Sam Eddy says Youtz retired the car from active racing in 1970 and put it in storage until 2004, when Eddy bought the original car. “I knew about that car since 1963. I first saw it before it was lettered. It was used in a homecoming parade once before they raced it. I always wanted it and knew someday I would own it. I tried for 25 years to buy this car and finally succeeded.

Chuck Sypolt Chevrolet was a good place to buy a car, I was told by several people. They had a great experience, Chuck was great to work with, and some still bought cars from Sypolts even after he moved to Louisville. “Chuck” Sypolt, age 87, passed February 3, 2007 at Affinity Medical Center – Massillon Campus. He was born on April 8, 1919 in Rowlesburg, WV and was the son of the late Harry & Margie (Haigler) Sypolt. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Marines. He was missed by many after his death!
