Bill Hall – Songwriter

William Cody (Bill) Hall

by Jenise Marshall

Singer, songwriter, musician William C. (Bill) Hall, along with his wife, Barbara, have been residents of the Village of East Canton since 1978. During their many years in the community, they raised their four children – Jenise, David, Bryan, and Jason – all of whom graduated from East Canton High School. While Bill is known among family, friends, and fellow musicians for his faith, coaching youth teams and his love for music, his contributions to American country music has earned him a place in its history.

Bill has been a life-long musical artist.  By the time he was in his teens he was playing in bands around the area while attending McKinley High School in Canton.  Later, he joined his brother’s country band playing local clubs and television. As time moved on, Bill led his own country and gospel bands. This included playing in competitions, state fairs, churches,  and You Can Be a Star on the Nashville Network. Bill’s band was often the opening act for major country artists such as Randy Travis, Merle Haggard, The Oak Ridge Boys, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn and others. He has also performed with Loretta Lynn on the Grand Ole Opry and other venues.  While traveling with Loretta and her band, Bill was also one of her security guards.  In 1980, Bill recorded his own gospel album called “Footprints in the Sand”.   Bill has also shared his musical abilities by teaching others how to play the guitar.

As a songwriter, Bill has found success in that  country artists of the 1970s placed his music on their albums.  This came after Bill had a huge hit recorded by Loretta Lynn in April of 1973.  The album cover and song are titled “Love is the Foundation”.  It became one of Loretta’s signature songs as it held two weeks as the number one song on Billboard’s Country Chart and remained on Billboard’s charts for a total of 15 weeks. “Love is the Foundation” has been included in at least twenty albums as it has been recorded by American and international artists.  The title album and Bill’s song were nominated for several awards. Bill also had duets recorded by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty called “A Lifetime Before” and “Don’t it Feel Good”.

Bill’s love for music and Jesus have been an inspiration to his family and beyond. Bill’s children, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren have participated in various artistic pursuits, continuing a family tradition rooted in creativity, performance and service.
